The following pages chronicle the journey of the sailing vessel Pelagic and her crew. We are a family of 5; Michael, Amy, Zander, Porter and Anakena, taking our 42' Hallberg Rassy as far as we can comfortably go in three years. We left Oregon in September 2014, participated in the 2014 Baja Haha, continued on through the Panama Canal, into the Caribbean, up the coast of the US to Maritime Canada and from there crossed the Atlantic. After an arrival in Ireland we toured Scotland, then sailed down to France, Portugal and on to Morocco. In January of 2016 we slowed down considerably and enrolled the kids in a local Spanish school in Sanlucar de Guadiana for a few months. In the spring of 2016 we crossed the Atlantic towards the Caribbean. We are now in the Pacific, officially on our way home, albeit via a very circuitous path. We are currently in French Polynesia and looking at weather windows to Hawaii before finally making landfall back in the Pacific Northwest.

Currently our exact location is not available. Our spot coverage will pick us back up in Hawaii towards the end of May, 2017.

Six Months to D-Day, March 7, 2014

We are officially 6 months away and the reality of this undertaking is really starting to set in.  We are in full holy sh*% mode now!  The stresses of actually sailing pale in comparison to the stresses of trying to leave a land based lifestyle behind.  There is so much to do, so little time to do it, and finite resources to do it all!  We probably won’t be the first cruisers to cast off with a lot less money than we were hoping for.  We’ve danced around the thought of staying another year and working hard to put some more savings away.  In the end we see a window of time, and we think the window will start closing if we wait longer.  We can only convince the older kids that 2 years with the family, full time, will be awesome for so long!  At some point the teenage beast will rear its ugly head.  Nooooo!

We are currently in the midst of showing the house, which is awful.  The house has to stay show clean!  That is a herculean undertaking with three kids and a dog!  We’ve shown the house probably 10 times and we are handing out a few applications.  Hopefully one of those will pan out.  If not it is back to scrubbing floors at 5 am, hiding counter top clutter in cabinets and pretending we live in this immaculate state full time.  Those that know me, know I’m no neat freak!  I will not go to my deathbed wishing I had spent more time cleaning my house!  A little dirt is good for the immune system!  My kids are super healthy.......something is working!

Next week is passport renewal, addressing the elephant in the room (what are we going to do with our dog?), purging and reference checking and background checking!  What fun!
